Coloring with Copics

During this President's Day weekend, I did a lot of crafting! I was very proud of myself! I completed a Design Team project that will be revealed at the end of the month. I also cut out 20 Valentines tags for a die cut swap. I completed some Memory Works orders and completed a little bit more of the mini album project that I'll be teaching at a retreat in July. But, the thing that I'm most proud of this weekend is that I brought out my Copic Sketch markers and practiced my blending techniques!

I took three classes last year from Krazy Kreations at the Sacramento Scrapbook Expo. They were Copics 101, 102 and 103. I learned a ton of techniques and then I went shopping on the showfloor and bought a ton of Copics along with an awesome carrying case! But, that was months ago and I hadn't touched them since.
But, after seeing Copics on sale at a friend's garage sale, I thought that I needed to bring them out again. I found all of my class materials and used the stamp that I received in class. Then I started coloring & blending. Don't get me wrong - it's hard to get the hang of it at first. I was frustrated in my classes at the Expo and I think that's why I let my markers sit for so long afterward. But, I can't get the hang of it until I try again and practice! That's the one thing that the ladies who taught the classes kept saying to us - Practice, practice, practice!
So, these dresses are my first attempts (again) to practice the blending techniques using colors that are 2 to 3 numbers apart. I used the lighter of the two colors first to cover the whole dress. Then I took the darker color and covered the top of the dress down to the hips. Then I alternated with the light & dark colors at the point where they blended to push the color back & forth. That's the hardest part! Trying to get the colors to flawlessly blend is hard to do. Plus, the colors tend to run a little when the paper gets saturated - as you can see on the orange and yellow dresses. But, you can use the Colorless Blender to push the color back in. I gave up on that after the orange dress. I did try it on the purple dress and it worked when I slipped outside the line.
Overall, it felt good to get these back out! I have a long way to go and a lot more techniques to perfect, but at least I was trying! I was super crafty this weekend! More project highlights to come!

We took a manila tag & decorated it with a variety of items.

This tag is in a shadow box and it's hanging in my master bathroom.

Obstacles in Scrapbooking

I was listening to a past Roundtable discussion from Paperclipping and it addressed all of the obstacles that we, as scrapbookers, come across that tend to stifle our artistic creativity. I think the number one reason for my stifled mojo is the imaginary idea of "perfection." I feel that my work has to live up to a certain set of standards. But whose standards? I've been published online a few times and I think that I have created my own misery by thinking that every layout or album or papercraft has to be of that particular caliber. I need to step back and realize that my projects are just that...MY projects! I create them for ME and for the enjoyment of my family and friends to look at because my creations showcase MY memories! I can't let these unrealistic ideals keep me from creating!

Another issue is that I feel overwhelmed to own and try every new product out there! I feel like I have to be an expert at misting, distressing, embossing, stamping, coloring with Copics, on & on & on. I enjoy all of those techniques, but I don't have to try every single one to be considered a successful scrapbooker. What truly is successful anyway? Yes, I know a lot about scrapbooking, but it's not my profession. Yes, I'm a Memory Works Independent Scrapbook Consultant and with that, there is a certain responsibility to be able to show my customers what my products can do, but I can't know everything and still have a life! Okay...exhale!

Time...that's always a factor. I work full-time as a Sales Assistant during the day. I try to advertise my Memory Works website as much as I can using social media and I also attend crops and retreats. I have taught a mini album class at a retreat and I've demonstrated techniques in tons of one-on-one sessions. I'm planning on teaching more classes if I can get into the Park & Rec listings in my area as well as local crops that I'm trying to put together. I want to put more time into teaching scrapbooking to others because I enjoy it so much, but that also takes away from my own personal scrapbooking. I got married last year and I have tons of photos from my wedding & honeymoon to scrap! I attend crops & retreats on my own too where I just scrap for me, but I always feel guilty that I should be advertising my business too! Talk about burning the candle at both ends!

Then there's the comparison to others who have tons of time to create. As I said, I work full-time and that job keeps the lights on for me. I would love to be able to create all day as my profession, but I know that I can't do that. But, that doesn't stop me from feeling a sense of jealousy and a little bit of artistic anger towards people that create for a living. Yes, I know that basing your profession on a hobby that has its ups and downs is not a stable income, but the jealousy is still there. I would love to be able to travel and show off my creations, but that's not my reality.

These are MY scrapbooking obstacles and I had to get them off of my chest. I don't mean to offend anyone with my opinions. They are just that...my opinions. Please leave me feedback on what obstacles you're facing in your scrapbooking. I would love to hear from my followers!

Valentine Project - Mini Album

As a member of the JME Creations Design team, our assignment was to create a Valentine's Day themed project. I chose a mini album! These are some of my favorite projects because you can do so much with them!

"The Descendants"

Go...go see this movie. You can't miss this one. Ever since George Clooney won the Golden Globe for his role in this film, I was intrigued. He always picks phenomenal roles and this one doesn't disappoint. I was absolutely amazed at the film and his performance. I believe that he deserves the Oscar as well. Wow, I'm just stunned.

It's been a while since a movie has made this much of an impact upon me. I'm still processing the emotional response that I'm having to every aspect of the plot. I won't spoil it for those of you that will go to see it. But, this movie hits home in more ways than one. I plan on finding the book that the movie was based on and reading it as soon as I can. The story is simple, but the emotional ramifications are quite intense.

Friendship is the best adhesive...

This past weekend, I went on a scrapbooking retreat to the Sacramento Delta. The retreat was organized by Grand Island Getaways and I had a fantastic time. My friend, Denise, invited me and my mom to join her and 2 other friends for a girls weekend. It was about a 2 hour drive in the rain to the location. It was an amazing home that has been turned into a getaway. It was warm & cozy! We each had our own 6' table and the hostess and her husband provided us with amazing meals and snacks. It was quite a unique experience.

These are the fantastic ladies that made my weekend so enjoyable!

While on this retreat, I learned a lot about myself and my scrapping style. I finally came to the conclusion that my scrapping is what it is. I finally exhaled that I scrap for me and me only. Therefore, I can let go of this fear that I'm not doing it "right." There is no "right" in scrapbooking. It's all about preserving my memories the way that I want to. My style is who I am and my friends appreciate that. We shared our projects with each other and everything does fabulous work! We're all great at our own style! I'm motivated to get more layouts done because I saw the fabulous ones that were created by Denise & Shannon. I'm inspired to create with Glimmer Mist & Smooch Inks because of the flowers that Mary was working on for her wedding albums. I'm excited to help Mom branch out with mini albums & scrapping layouts. In essence, my wonderful friends have ignited my creativity again! I'm so happy! Plus, we shared stories, laughs, snacks & supplies! It was like one big slumber party! We all promised to get together again soon at the next retreat, crop, Expo...whatever! As long as we "stick" together, there won't be a shortage of smiles & scrapping!

Project Life - Days 7-10

Despite being sick, I managed to keep up with Project Life through the weekend!

Day 7 - Sister Night at the San Jose Sharks game! They played against the Washington Capitals and they WON! My favorite player, Patrick Marleau scored goals and assisted on others. The final score was 2-5! My sister and I don't get many special nights out, so I thought it was really cool that she got the Sharks tickets as my Christmas gift. She also treated me to dinner at Rosie's New York Pizza where we had some good laughs. We got gummy bears and peanut M&M's as snacks at the game. It was a SUPER FUN NIGHT!

Day 8 - This is my cat, Lazarus. He will be 15 this year! I've had him every since he was 6 weeks old! He doesn't look too happy in this picture because I woke him up. He was sleeping next to me on Sunday when I wasn't feeling well. He knows when things aren't right with me and he never leaves my side.

Day 9 - Monday was the BCS Championship with Alabama versus LSU. My husband is a die-hard Alabama fan and I was so glad that Alabama ended up winning! GO BAMA! ROLL TIDE!

Day 10 - I ended up leaving work early today because I felt sick to my stomach. I made it to my mom's house and stayed there for a while for some TLC. I couldn't help but feel better when I saw Drake conked out on the couch with a little smile on his face. Too cute!

Under the weather...

This morning, I woke up with a pounding head and a scratchy throat. I managed to make it through the holidays without getting sick, but today proved to be my lucky day. I slept the day away and finally got up around 2:30pm to get something to eat. Then it was back to bed with my laptop. I checked emails and caught up with the happenings on Facebook. My husband went to Target for groceries and household needs. It was a big shopping trip and he did it all! I was so grateful. We needed a ton of stuff!
For my Project Life photo for today, it's all about Earl Grey tea and Halls Cough Drops!

Please send your good thoughts my way, so I can kick this cold quickly. My sister is taking me to the San Jose Sharks game tomorrow night, so I need a loud voice to cheer! It's been a little while since we've had dedicated sister time, so I can't miss this for anything! More tea and Halls for me! GO SHARKS!!!

New Year's Resolutions & Project Life

I know I'm a few days late, but I do want to wish all of my crafty friends a very Happy New Year! 2012 is destined to be a productive year for me and I hope for you too! I made a few "realistic" resolutions this year. Every year, I do the same ones and I end up losing sight of them and then they all vanish by February! But, not this year! My resolutions have to do with my scrapbooking hobby & business. Here is my list:
1. Clean and organize my scrap room - Already in progress!
2. Be creative every day! - I'm accomplishing this with Project Life & my blogging right now. I plan to attempt to complete a mini album every other week since I have so many kits!
3. Try to get published again - I've been published a few times online, but I want to try to do it again this year.
4. Get a scrapbooking group going locally - I established a Meetup group "Peninsula/Bay Area Scrapbookers" and I hope to get some meetings scheduled for February. I'd like to get to know scrappers in my area.
5. Grow my Memory Works business - I'm advertising on Facebook, maintaining my personal website, keeping in touch with my customers and attending crops & retreats. Hopefully my group meetings will help me build a larger customer base too.
Hopefully I'll have success with these resolutions and things will get moving in a creative way!

In keeping with Resolution #2, here is Project Life - Day 5!

I had a coupon from Chili's for a free Red Velvet Molten Cake dessert! So, I treated my hubby to dinner since he worked all day in the house taking down the Christmas tree! He wrapped all of the ornaments in tissue paper, took down the lights, cut the tree in half, took it outside and then vacuumed the living room! I think that surely deserves a free dessert! I have the best husband in the world!

Project Life 365 - Days 1-4

I am once again attempting Project Life 365. I did it in 2010 and it was a challenging, yet rewarding, experience. For those of you who don't know about this project, it was created by Becky Higgins and it entails taking a photo every single day for a whole year. Becky actually has project kits that you can buy which include the album, page protectors and all sorts of journaling cards. Back in 2010, I just used the photo albums that have 4X6 page protectors (2 to a page) that also had the journaling space right next to it. I got a pack of 2 albums at JoAnns and used both of them. I skipped 2011 because I was planning my wedding and that was busy enough! Now, here I am in 2012 and I'm at it again! This time, I well prepared with photo lists. It got pretty challenging about 6 months into the project and trying to come up with interesting photo ideas. This year will be better! Here are my first few days:

Day 1 - My husband and I took a trip to the mall on New Year's Day. We stopped at the fountain in the middle of the mall, so that I could check in on my turtles. I love turtles and I often stop with a cold soda and hang out here to watch them. This is one of the first times that I've seen the majority of them on the rocks!

Day 2 - I dragged my husband to Michaels to buy some JetMax cubes. I made a goal to organize my scrap room and get my creative space in order! This is just the beginning of the wall of cubes. I have a ton of stuff to organize and clean. But, in the end, it will be a fabulous scrap room and creativity will abound!

Day 3 - My mom has several cats. I found these two snuggled up on her couch. Drake (the tan cat) was not too happy when Drew (the tortoiseshell cat) decided to snuggle up to him! It was too funny! I had to capture the moment!

Day 4 - The sunset today was gorgeous. I took this photo about 5:15pm. Sometimes you just have to stop and enjoy the natural world around you. After having a stressful day, this was just what I needed...

I hope to share more photos as the days go by. This is going to be a fun project.
2012 will be documented in every way that I can capture it!

Getting Organized!

So, the transformation of my scrap room has officially begun! My resolutions for 2012 are to be more organized and to be more creative. Step 1 was to get my scrap room organized. So, I talked my husband into coming with me to Michaels because they were having a 50% off sale on the JetMax cubes. Of course, my hubby has to do all of the heavy lifting! He is my biggest fan, so he came along to help. We ended up buying a ton of storage and he even got some of his own for the Man Cave! Score!

Here is the beginning of one wall of my room! I love all of the options that JetMax has! There are a few more 4 slot cubes and a magazine rack that I still need to put together. But, I personally put together every single piece! I have a real sense of accomplishment knowing that all of my hard work will pay off with a fabulous room!

When my hubby gets all done with his Man Cave, I hope that he'll let me post pictures! He's doing such a great job! I love how it's coming out. He has his space and I have mine. It's a marriage made in heaven!

On the creative side, I'm hoping to put together a project or layout every week. I need to keep the creativity going on a regular basis. I feel so rushed at the last minute if I have a Design Team project due and I've been too busy. My goal is to make time every week to get at least one creative thing done - whether it's planning a layout, printing pictures and choosing paper or putting together a mini album kit. I just feel better when I've created something with my hands.

Paper Hoarders Design Team Project

I'm a proud Guest Designer on the Paper Hoarders Design Team! Paper Hoarders is a group of scrappers, cardmakers and paper crafters that openly admit to being paper hoarders! LOL! No, really we're a fun group of ladies on Facebook that enjoy talking about crafting and of course, PAPER! I'm honored to be a part of the Design Team and we were asked to make Home Decor projects for December.

I got busy with my Cricut and created some decorations for my windows! I used the Art Philosophy cartridge for the ornament and the trees. I used the Create A Critter cartridge for the reindeer! Isn't he just too cute! I put some Icicle Stickles on the ornament for some sparkle!

JME Creations Design Team Project

My assignment for the JME Creations Design Team was to create a project using snowmen.

For my card, I cut the snow hill from white cardstock and then covered it with Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam paint in Chandelier to give it the added sparkle!

The stickers were all from my stash.

I stayed with the traditional red & green theme.

The epoxy stickers are from Sticko and the tag was cut from a sheet of the K&Company patterned paper. I used foam dots underneath to make it pop.

For my birthday project, I made a Birthday Reminder album using paper bags.

The idea came from a Big Picture Classes self-paced workshop.

I used the flap from each of the paper bags to create a pocket.

I used cardstock and patterned paper to cover each page.

Then I used ribbon, buttons and stickers for embellishments.

Each month has a card insert that you can use to record names and birthdates.

Then the insert can be hung on your fridge or bulletin board as a reminder!

I am truly thankful for my family.

My mother and my sister have always been there for me through all of my ups & downs.

We lost my Dad in 2003 and we had to pull together and stay strong.

For my non-card project, I made a gift bag. I covered the bag with patterned paper and then used the technique of paper tearing to create the center piece. I used a digi stamp from Sweet Stamping Treats and colored it with Smooch Inks and gel pens. I used flowers from my stash and used foam dots for the ones at the top & bottom.

The tulle, roses, ribbon and button were all from my stash. I stayed with my purple theme because it's my favorite and I think it's a fabulous vintage color!

I am very proud to be a Navy granddaughter. My grandfather, Joseph Combs, served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. For my project, I created a layout using some of his Navy photos, his dog tag and his Navy ID card. I am so happy that I got to hear countless stories of his years of service. Veteran's Day is special to me and my family because he proudly served our country and protected the freedom that we still enjoy.

For my tag, I used Bazzill cardstock to cover my tag. I inked my dress form with Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Dusty Concord. I used a strip of rhinestones from Recollections to add some bling! The flowers, buttons & ribbon are just from my stash. Can you tell that purple is my favorite color?

Design Team Projects - The holidays are coming!

I wanted to share with you some of the Design Team projects that I have made recently.

First, this is my Gratitude Journal. I made this project for the JME Creations Design Team. We were supposed to create a Thank You project. I created this Gratitude Journal using the "Giving Thanks" line from Teresa Collins. The journal contains a journaling card for each of the 12 months where I can write down things that I am thankful for. I also have embellished pages to include pictures. There are also pocket pages for any additional pictures or journaling that I want to include. This project will begin in the new year for me and I'm excited to be able to write everything down. It will give me a new perspective to enjoy all of the littlel things in life!

Next is my holiday card for the Especially Made for You Design Team. We were to make a card from a sketch for our weekly blog challenge. I decided to get started with my holiday card making! I feel like I'm already behind! LOL! I stayed with the traditional red & green Christmas theme and mixed in some patterned papers along with some chipboard circles. The "Happy Holidays" stamp is from the Close To My Heart "Winter" set.

Now here is my banner!

I used the stocking chipboard album from the Michaels $1 bin as my base. I decorated each stocking with Christmas paper from the Recollections pack. I used Stickles to decorate the top of each one & put some individual spots on the polka dots, the snowflakes and the Christmas trees. I used Holly, Silver, Candy Cane, Icicle and Xmas Red. I absolutely love using Stickles!
Here is the finished banner with my ribbon strung all the way across. I had to use Crafty Tape to secure the ribbon to the top & back of each stocking to get the banner to lay flat since there was only one hole in each of the stockings. But, I think that it came out great!

I am most thankful for my family. My Mom and Dad taught me tons of life lessons that still stay with me to this day. My sister has been the best listener over the years and always offers the very best advice. When we lost my Dad in 2003 in a tragic car accident, it was devastating to us. But, we had to pull together as a family and we've been unbelievable strong! We keep his memory alive and he's with us all the time! Family is truly forever.

Spooky Chandelier - JME Creations DT Project

At long last, I get to share my Spooky Chandelier! This project took me quite a while, but I am so proud of it! I made this my Halloween themed project for the JME Creations Design Team.

I used the DCWV chandelier template. I cut 6 templates from black cardstock and 6 templates of assorted patterned paper from the Halloween Recollections pack from Michaels. Yes, I did hand cut all of the templates with scissors and an Xacto knife! It was time consuming, but well worth it for the end result! I added Stickles in Black Diamond & Orange Peel to accentuate the candles. I used Silver Stickles to accent the spiderwebs.

The center of the chandelier is just a paper towel roll painted with Black Gesso. I glued one black template back-to-back with one patterned template. I left a 1/2" overlap unglued, so that I could create a flattened edge to adhere to the paper towel roll. I then glued each piece onto the roll with Glossy Accents. I used my Tiny Attacher to staple a piece of ribbon to the top in order to hang it. I absolutely love how this came out! Happy Halloween!

Design Team Projects

I wanted to share some projects that I have created for the Design Teams that I am currently creating for! I've been in a good creative groove lately and I wanted to pass on the inspiration!

This card was created for the madewithlove (and paper) Design Team.

The idea was to create a project that encompassed fall colors, plaids/checkers, layering & swirls.

I used the layered embellishment that included the fall colors & the checkers and added the swirls with Copper Stickles! I just love creating fall projects!

I chose a blue card and used the striped paper from the Princess line of Boxer Scrapbooks.

I'm excited to be the Guest Designer again for the Paper Hoarders Design Team! This time, I had to create a layout with either a pumpkin or a ghost. I went with the pumpkin and a Halloween theme! I created a double page layout of some of the costumes that my sister and I wore when we were kids. Each of the small pumpkins on the corner of the photos has the year (if I could find it.) This was a fun layout to put together!

For my project, I created a layout using a photo I took on my honeymoon. This was a day at Universal Studios - Hollywood and I got to take a picture with Marilyn Monroe! She was the ultimate Hollywood starlet! I used the CTMH Art Philosophy Cricut cartridge for the background and the Lovely Floral cartridge for the lettering. The stars were cut from the Plantin Schoolbook cartridge. Hooray for Hollywood!

My layout features my cat, Lazarus! He is 14 years old and I've had him ever since he was 7 weeks old. His name is Lazarus because he literally rose from the dead. He was thrown into a dumpster and left for dead because he was so sick & malnourished. But, he meowed so loud that someone found him and I ended up bringing him home and nursing him back to health. He had a high fever, mites in his ears, an eye infection and a respiratory infection. But with a lot of TLC and tons of meds, he is still alive and meowing to this day! He loves playing with fuzz ball toys and he loves the taste of ham! He truly is a part of my family!

One of the things that I love about Fall is the vast array of colors! One of the things that I love about Halloween is the treats! So, for my project, I have a combination of both! This is a treat bag that I made in May Flaum's Creative Crop mini class! We used a brown paper lunch bag, folded down the top portion about 1/3 of the way down and decorated it with fall colors and a bright orange foam pumpkin! It was a blast!

For the pumpkin, I chose some fall leaves and some straw ribbon.

The brad in the middle is from Pink Paislee.

The handle was made from two 12" strips of paper.

One was 1.5" wide and the other was 2" wide.

I just glued one centered on the other and secured it with two Pink Paislee black brads.

Now, it's ready to be filled with treats!

World Cardmaking Day!

My card is one that I made during a crop that I attended over the weekend which was hosted by May Flaum. She is one of my favorite teachers and one of the projects at the crop was to make a card. We used the Pink Paislee Resist Papers along with the Tim Holtz Distress Stains. I also inked the edge of the die cut to make it stand out more against the background and patterned papers. The rose cameo piece added the final touch to a great project!

For my 1st project, I decided to alter a plain black binder and dress it up with a fancy title!

I created the title from the Simply Charmed Cricut cartridge. Gotta love that smiley face!

For my 2nd project, I altered a small canister and created a pencil/pen holder!

The patterned paper is from the Elementary Collection from Studio Calico.

The gingham ribbon is just a scrap that I had in my stash to add some color!

Now we're ready for class to begin!

For my project, I decided to do a layout showcasing some of the photos that I took of the fall foliage near Sacramento, CA. I used light brown cardstock as my base. The photos are matted with patterned paper from the "Apple Cider" line from Imaginisce. The leaves in the upper corner were cut from Accent Essentials Cricut cartridge. The scarecrow is from the Celebrate with Flourish cartridge and the tree is from the Cindy Loo cartridge. The "Autumn Leaves" title is a rub-on from Bo Bunny. I used a ton of stuff in my scrap room to make this project!

Guest Designer - Paper Hoarders Design Team

I'm so excited to be a Guest Designer for the Paper Hoarders Design Team! My assignment was to create a fall layout using the gorgeous fall colors! So, I used the fall leaves paper from one of the DCWV Photo Stacks along with some leaf embellishments. The word strips in the lower right hand corner are "family tradition", "precious", "special", "everlasting", "comfort", "genuine", "unconditional" and 'XOXOXO." The "family" embellishment came from a Sticko pack. The wooden frame around the picture is from an embellishment pack from JoAnn's.

Our 1st project was to use an apple. I used the apple in the Celebrate with Flourish Cricut cartridge. I decided to use fall colors to celebrate the coming of the new season. The border strip on the bottom is from Jillibean Soup. The "Giving Thanks" is a rub-on from Bo Bunny.

Labor of Love Halloween Blog Hop - DAYS 3 & 4

Welcome to the Labor of Love Halloween Blog Hop! If you came from Pam's blog, then you're in the right place. If you just stumbled onto my blog, then please start at the beginning and see all of the fabulous creations from these talented ladies.

I am so honored to be a part of this hop because the banners that we have all made are going to a special group of children. These children are at the Pediatric Specialty Care center and they are struggling with difficult situations in their young lives. Our banners will decorate their doorways at Halloween and hopefully bring a smile to their faces. You can read more about the center here.

Here is the banner that I made!

I used the canvas banner flags from Maya Road and misted them with Jack O'Lantern Glimmer Mist. Then I used various Halloween stickers and embellished them with Stickles. I especially loved using the Silver Stickles to make the web drop from the banner to the spider! I really had a great time creating this banner knowing that it is going to a wonderful cause!

Wow! Where did August go? Time has sure flown this year! As we head into September, into the fall season and straight into the holidays, things will sure be busy here! You can look forward to tons of projects from me as I cruise through tons of blog hops! I'm addicted to these now! But, they are a great source of motivation to use up my stash as well as create with all of the new fantastic lines that are coming out every day now! You'll see projects that I've created using the new lines from Teresa Collins, Simple Stories, Fancy Pants, Echo Park, Bo Bunny and many more! Stay tuned in the coming months for creative chaos!

For my final project, I wanted to show everyone how to make a lei from your stash!

I took a border strip from K&Company...

I cut pairs of flowers from the strip.....

Then, I folded them in half and put a small glue dot on each side.

I cut a piece of ribbon long enough to hang around my neck.

Then I placed the ribbon in the middle of one side of the flower pair.

I folded the flower over the ribbon & then spaced them out evenly all around the ribbon.

I tied a knot at the top and there you have your festive lei! ALOHA!

I added some Thickers to spell out "Sweet Treats."

I added some recipe cards.

Then I punched holes with my Crop-A-Dile and tied everything together with baker's twine!
